Artist's Statement

Faces and figures tell stories.  The goal of my work is to relate the feeling of those stories through realistic drawing and painting.  As humans we are extremely sensitive to the slightest muscle tension and shift in expression.  I aim to render these subtleties, employing a realism that is self-aware of its medium by deliberate markmaking, often emphasizing color and contrast.  My works sensually explore the human figure as a poetic composition, charged with emotions that are universal yet deeply personal.  The resulting figures are timeless yet unmistakably modern.  I dabble between various styles and media, mainly figures and landscapes, using charcoal, pastel, oil, acrylic, glass, etc. My most recent endeavor involved crushing glass and glazing it over my oil paintings.  Working with and between multiple media pushes me to innovate artistically, satisfying my creative appetites and allowing me to create a body of engaging contemporary figurative artwork.
